刀は実用品でしたので持ち主の好みでサイズを調整することがあります。
その際中心のほうから寸法をつめるのですがこれを「摩上(すりあげ)る」といいます。
当然銘が消えたり欠けたりすることがあるのですが、
銘が残るものを摩上、銘がなくなっちゃったものを大摩上といいます。
中心の先は"切り"(まっすぐ)に仕上げ、錆びも付けなおすのが掟です。
